The Definition of a Carpet

A carpet, by definition, is a textile floor covering that consists of a layer of pile that is attached onto a backing. In general the pile is either made of wool or a manmade fibre. This could be a fibre like nylon, polyester or polypropylene and mostly consists of twisted tufts that have been heat-treated so that they maintain their structure. With carpets being so popular and often used all around the world, many stories of a Magic carpet have been told. The Magic carpet is a legendary carpet that can be used to transport the people who are on it quickly, or sometimes even instantaneously, to their destination. The term “carpet” stems from an Old Italian word “carpita”, which means “to pluck”. Often the terms carpet and rug are used interchangeably, although they are not exactly the same thing. A carpet is a floor covering that stretches from wall to wall, and a rug only covers a small area.
