I am very glad to have received the car, as I have not had a car for several years, ever since my first car broke down. In 1926, the 33/180 new Mercedes, driven by Caracciola, a name to become almost a household word in the decade which followed, broke the sports car record for the flying kilometre at 95 m.p.h. It is not recorded what distance the car required to come to a stop at the end of this fine effort. The direct lineal descendant of these two cars, the 33/140 and the 33/180, appeared in the midsummer of 1927, and if neither of its forebears were cars of outstanding merit, the Mercedes S class which followed them was the first of a line of sporting motor cars whose performance has become a legend. From the moment it appeared it was an instant success; it sold in considerable numbers, and was owned and driven by wealthy sportsmen in almost every country in the world. Today in its various guises it is one of the most sought after collectors’ pieces in the vintage car movement. These were the fabulous new slk series Mercedes-Benz sports cars, the only true sports cars ever to compete as full Grand Prix racing cars in International competition, a distinction shared by later 2-3 Alfa Romeos.
