Several Aquaponics System Plans Can Be Used in the Country

Friday, December 30th, 2011

When Aunt Geraldine told the family that she was quitting her job and moving out of the city, we all nearly fell over. Our family has lived in the city for over 20 years, and having my aunt and uncle right down the street has been one of the best experiences of my life. Aunt Geraldine is more of your urbanized woman, who always seems to know the hippest things to do and what events are going on around town. She always is drinking the finest wine, and eating the best food too, and that is why we always like going to her house. Times have gotten tougher for her, and her business has been suffering. She asked me to help her research several different aquaponics system plans which she intends to use to build her own garden at her new country home. I am excited to help her build the system, but can’t help but wonder if she is moving out of the city too quickly.

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

If you are considering purchasing a chainsaw, then the Husqvarna Chainsaw Reviews will point you in the right direction. They are genuine and honest reviews by real people, who actually own one, and not just someone trying to advertise and sell them. The reviews are on Big Granite where members can send in their views and tips for all things related to the garden.

If you have tried various brands of chainsaws in the past and been very disappointed, then you have never used a Husqvarna one, as it’s performance and quality is second to non. They are easy to handle and have lots of safety features, which is important, as it is a lethal weapon, and cheap second rate ones could be disastrous in the wrong hands.

The design and construction is perfect for all abilities, as it is not too heavy, and the chainsaw will start the first time on every occasion that you use it.

Information About Grow Lights

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Grow lights are normally used for plant propagation, food production and indoor gardening. Food production includes indoor aquatic plants and hydroponics. Despite the fact that these lights are used for industrial purposes, using them for household purposes is also applicable.

The inverse square law states that the intensity of light coming from a certain point, and reaches a surface, is inversely proportional to the surface distance squared. This means that if the plant is twice far away from the source, it will only receive a quarter of the light emitted. This leads to employment of numerous techniques so that the plants can receive the highest possible amount of light.

Reflectors are often used to maximize the light efficiency. Plants are sometimes moved closer to lights so that they can receive equal amounts of lights. There are different types of bulbs used as grow lights. They range from fluorescent lights, incandescent, LEDs and the high intensity discharge lights. Fluorescents are often used due to their efficiency.

Finding Electric Wood Chippers for Sale

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

There are a lot of different kinds of wood chippers for sale. One of the most common types of woodchippers for homeowners by is an electric chipper. This is because an electrical wood chipper can be plugged into an outlet and does not need to use gas. This appeals to a lot of homeowners that only need a wood chipper for small projects once or twice a year.

In addition, an electric wood chipper actually costs less money than a gas powered wood chipper. This is because the electric engine is cheaper and also because it is generally a smaller size chipper. People love to buy these electric chippers because they can use them for chipping wood, but they can also use them for shredding leaves and for creating mulch. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of different things that you can do with a wood chipper. They are so useful, that I think every home should own their own wood chipper

Following Good Plant Watering Principles

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

My wife has built and maintained a beautiful outdoor garden filled with flowers, herbs and vegetables. I have never had much of a green thumb, but for some reason I am really attracted to the idea of indoor gardening. I think it is because it appeals more to my style than anything else. I like to know that I can control the elements for the plants, rather than hope the weather will be seasonable this year. While the garden outside is flourishing, it does so only in part to natural rainfall and sunlight. My wife makes sure those plants are watered every day, and she does so in the early part of the day to be sure they are not burned by the sunlight refracting through the water droplets. In like manner, I would want to get an led grow light to simulate the sun, and I would need to follow the same principles of watering that my wife does.

Backyard Ponds: It’s All a Question of Maintenance

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

Maintaining backyard ponds can be challenging. Or not. Just depends on the thought you put into setting them up and what you put into them. So while digging and lining the pond is half the battle, the rest lies in choices you make after you’ve filled your pond with water.

Fish or no? Fish eat algae. They also eat mosquito larvae. Both acts are good things. But to support fish you need your pond to be deep enough. 18 inches is deep enough although 24 inches is better.

Shade or sun? Algae needs sun to thrive. So do pond plants. To get aquatic plants to bloom you want at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Which will also encourage algae growth unless you shade the pond with plants like water lilies with leaves that can cover quite an expanse of water surface.

Plants or not? Speaking of plants there are a variety of plants your pond can support. You likely want both submerged and floating plants if you have fish. Water lilies and water hyacinth make for a good mix too. The plants will fight with the algae for nutrients. Making them a good addition to your pond scheme of things.

Rigid or flexible? Liners that is. You see pond liners, excluding concrete, come in two basic varieties. You can put in a flexible liner like EPDM or PVC or you can get a molded one like fiberglass or plastic. Most pondscapers would tell you to go flexible, because it’s, well, flexible. It can adapt to any shape you dig and lasts a good long time. Even in direct sunlight.

Would you like to filter that? The better balanced the little ecosystem you’ve got brewing is the less need you’ve got for filtration. But mechanical filtering can help keep thing neat and tidy. And aid in fighting algae. You can buy a bio filter or make your own. Buying is easier but DIY is cheaper. You pick.

Protecting My Vegetable Garden

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Last year I started my first vegetable garden and grew lots of delicious veggies throughout the summer. I was growing my veggies in containers because our house is rented and I didn’t want to dig up the garden, but they were still outside and I was still aware of protecting them from local wildlife so that I could enjoy the fruits of my hard work and not our local deer and groundhogs! I did a bit of research into the best deer repellants and found some natural-based sprays that seemed to be effective. I think the crab apple tree far away from my veggie garden also helped keep the deer away as they were more attracted to the falling apples. I also planted flowers that are not as commonly eaten by deer and think this helped as well. I didn’t have a major problem with deer, or groundhogs but this year I think I might have to find out how to stop the caterpillars!

Nothing Quenches a Thirst Like a Cold Drink on a Hot Day

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Though summer is hot still it is the most enjoyable season as one gets to eat and drink a lot of cool things. Drinking cold juices, cold coffee, cold milkshakes and a variety of aerated cold drinks is the best thing during summer. I like to lounge under my gazebo in my garden and enjoy the warm weather.

Children are especially happy during this season as they like to eat all cold things. Moreover summer is the best time for ice cream lovers as one really feels refreshing after eating an ice cream coming from out . Though during the day time it is hot and one feels the heat while going out still the evenings are very pleasant when cold winds blow. During the day time all switch on the air conditioners to escape the heat and usually stay indoors. People wear light cotton clothes to protect themselves from heat during summer season. I enjoy going outdoors during this season.

Tips For Transplanting Roses

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Roses are pretty hardy plants, but even so it is worth having a few tips under your belt to help the transition go smoothly, and give the rose a greater chance of thriving in its new location. Good preparation includes giving the rose a good heavy watering for three days before you plan to dig it up and move it; landscaping bay area. Also, be clear on where you are moving the rose too. In emergency situations you could plant it temporarily in your vegetable garden, which will have loose soil, but it’s not ideal. The hole you dig should be larger than you think you will need, and when you plant the rose, sit it over a mound of dirt and spread the roots over it. Including a good fertilizer like blood and bone, or compost is always a good measure, to help protect against shock and give it some extra care. Pack the soil in firmly, but not so the ground is hard as concrete. And give the rose some TLC (tender loving care) for the next few months while it settles.

Worms: The garden’s best friend

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Though seen as icky and slimy from the bystander’s point of view, worms particularly earthworms are the gardener’s best friend. It is important that worms not be killed once they are unearthed from a garden plot, no matter how disgusting they look and how many they are. Worms play a big part in the mulching process of recycling organic waste materials such as leaves which they later on digest to make more nutrients. Worm faeces or droppings are called casings and they are nutrient rich. Once a worm digests organic material they will drop these casings deep into the earth near the plant roots and this in turn will be absorbed by the plants. Worms also have the additional benefit of churning the earth underneath the roots so as to avoid clumping of soil particularly near the roots. This churning helps to make the soil more porous and absorbent for water to pass through to the roots. For more info see Landscape Design Woodside.
