My third-grade son was having a huge struggle in school with his grades. We had had his eyes and his hearing checked, made sure he was not sitting next to his best buddy to get distracted, and spoken with his teacher regularly. His behavior was good, he checked out physically, and was seated next to a very quiet little girl. In spite of all it looked like he might fail third grade.
Finally I set aside some time to really pay attention to his reading. I don’t know why I hadn’t done that a long time ago. He could barely sound out the simplest words. I was ready to call a professional reading program, but I decided to work with him myself a little bit and see what happened. I bought some good children’s books, and began reading with him.
We were fortunate. As it turned out, the school had been through a transition time with their elementary teachers, and he had kind of fallen through the cracks. He had not learned phonics well with the problems the school had been through, and somehow he had just been pushed on through without being at an acceptable level. After a few weeks of working with him and helping him with the sounds, his reading improved drastically.
Now he loves to read and his grades have improved, and I learned a valuable lesson. I will never again take it for granted that everything is going well when my kids are under someone else’s care – I don’t care how professional they are. It is my job to make sure they are getting what they need, and I will see to it from now on.
